Tea and Cake with... Mimi

There would be no Mimi's without Mimi and with this in mind we wanted to have a chat with Mimi herself to find out a bit about what makes her tick and get some top tips. I sat down over tea and cake (obviously) with the heart of the business to find out more about Mimi's and the lady behind the cake! So keep reading for some Mimi insights including her favourite places to go in Edinburgh.

Where did you grow up? I grew up in the Liberton area of Edinburgh. I stayed in the Southside of the city until 2010 and have now moved to the Shore area of Leith and truly love it!

How would you describe the magic of Mimi’s? I have tried to create a unique vibe and ensure Mimi’s conjures up feelings of warmth and always provides friendly efficient service. Our cakes are made with the best ingredients we can source and hope this conveys our passion for what we do.

Mimi’s Bakehouse turned 5 last December, what have been your top 5 moments over these years?

  • Opening the doors five years ago to everyone telling us it was a bad idea, the location would never work but I always had total faith in what we had created as a business model.
  • Winning Scottish Craft Baker of the year and Visit Scotland’s Best Casual Dining in Scotland in 2015.
  • Birth of our first grandchild, Rose Michelle, another generation to add to the many bakers in our family tree maybe?
  • My three daughters getting married within 9 months – all in 3 different countries! A busy but wonderful time.
  • Being approached a few years back by a customer to do her wedding cake and since then watching that side of the business go from strength to strength. We love bringing some Mimi’s love to a couples special day.

As a family business, what is like working with your three daughters? I love working with the girls, it’s fabulous watching them grow as young professionals. I feel privileged to be able to see them every day and still maintain our close relationship.

What advice would you give to future bakers? Use the best ingredients you can afford, weigh ingredients carefully as baking is an exact science and mistakes are often made by not weighing out carefully. Also don’t be afraid to experiment!

    What are your 3 top restaurants/ cafes in Edinburgh? Scran and Scallie, The Kitchin and La Favorita.

    What would be the top attractions you’d recommend to anyone visiting Edinburgh? I love the Royal Mile from top to bottom: it allows tourists to take in the lovely atmosphere of the old town. The National Museum of Scotland is always a favourite with families and Rose loves it too.

    I have been very fortunate to know Mimi for at least 35 years ??. She’s a remarkable woman, an amazing wife, mother & friend. Mimi has achieved so so much in her life & feel so proud to call her my friend. Mimi’s daughters are such an inspiration & that’s down to their fabulous parents. Here’s to the future ladies love you lots Michelle xxx
